This Bircher Muesli is made of 4 main ingredients with 2 optional ones to give it more texture and flavor. It tastes lighter than overnight oats but still got a creamy texture that makes it a satisfying breakfast.

It’s starting getting hot these few weeks, so I want to have something chill in the morning. The first thing comes to my mind is overnight oats, but I want to make something a little bit different. And here is the Bircher Muesli.

This recipe is inspired by Angela’s The Oh She Glows Cookbook. I adapted a little according to what I have at hand and my personal preferences. It’s made of 4 main ingredients: rolled oats, dried fruits, apples, and yogurt.

Different from the Blueberry Pear Coconut Overnight Oats I shared a while ago, this Bircher Muesli tastes lighter but still has the satisfying creamy texture that I adore so much.

Story of Bircher Muesli

When I first knew Bircher Muesli, I was like “Humm, it looks very similar to overnight oats.” After googling, I’m a bit surprised to find that it’s actually a nutritious breakfast invented by a Swedish doctor Maximilian Bircher-Benner for his patients. (References: BBC, The Muesli Guys)

This news brings up this simple breakfast in my heart. And I think it’s kind of similar to the raw and whole-food diet nowadays.

It’s both healthy and delicious. (BTW, I don’t support sacrificing flavor for only health)

Simple and easy to make

Anyway, the most important thing is that it’s delicious and simple to make, with only 6 basic ingredients: Grated apples, cinnamon, oats, nuts, seeds, and yogurt.

And it’s also very great for meal prep. You just do it as you do to overnight oats: Mix all together, refrigerate overnight, take out from the fridge, and EAT!

A Combination of nutritious plant food

It not only tastes good but also looks beautiful. The chopped apples and dried fruits really give it multiple textures. The natural sweetness from the apples combined with the oaty flavor, this Bircher Muesli is really MY FOOD.

As for the nutrition part, I think you already know the saying that “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”, right?

One thing I want to mention: the oats. Use rolled oats, aka. old-fashion oats, instead of instant oats. The soaking time will make instant oats too soggy.

In the morning, you can just enjoy it in the jar or scoop it out to add more toppings as you wish.

  • 45 g rolled oats 傳統燕麥片
  • 120 ml soy yogurt 豆漿優格
  • 1 medium apple 蘋果
  • 1 Tbsp pumpkin seeds 南瓜籽
  • 1 Tbsp raisins 葡萄乾
  • 1 Tbsp dried cranberries 蔓越莓乾
  • A dash of ground cinnamon 肉桂粉, optional 非必要

Optional toppings

  • almond flakes 杏仁片
  • maple syrup 楓糖漿


  • 將蘋果切半、去核(若是用非有機或是不安心可去皮),一半刨成絲,一半切塊
  • 接著將除了杏仁片外的所有食材放入圓碗中混合均勻
  • 將混合物放入密封罐中,置於冰箱冷藏一晚,或至少泡 2 小時,讓燕麥片軟化
  • 從冷藏取出,加上杏仁片或其它喜歡的配料即可享用

English Version

  • Half and core the apple. Grate one half and chop the other into chunks.
  • Add all ingredients EXCEPT the sliced almonds in a bowl and stir to combine.
  • Transfer the mixture to an air-tight jar, covered, and refrigerate overnight, or at least soak for 2 hours until the rolled oats are soft.
  • Remove from the fridge, sprinkle the sliced almond on top or add other toppings you like. Enjoy!

  • Storage: Store in an air-tight jar in the fridge for 1-2 days.
