Homemade Apple Pie Spice

If you love apple pie as much as I do, I’m sure you’re going to love/make this Apple Pie Spice. It’s an efficient way to speed up the process of making your apple pie. It’s also super great to add in other baked goods!

Apple Pie Spice is very similar to Pumpkin Pie Spice. Both are spice mix specially made for their name-originator: Apple pie spices for apple pie, pumpkin pie spice for pumpkin pie.

The ingredients of both spice mixes are also very similar, generally including ground cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves. There are other two spice that can “spice” it up more: cardamom and allspice.

If you’re not familiar with spices, it might seem a lot to collect. But if number helps, you actually need only basic 4 ingredients to make a decent mix of apple pie spice.

BASIC INGREDIENTS FOR APPLE PIE SPICE

  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Ground Nutmeg
  • Ground Ginger
  • Ground Clove

In addition to these 4 ground spices, there are two more that can enrich the overall flavor:

  • Ground Cardamon
  • Ground Allspice

And you might notice the word “ground” repeatedly stated here because I’m listing the measurement for them in ground form instead of their original shapes.

The reason for this is 1) ground ones are more common in most countries, and 2) not everyone has a grinder in the house.

WHERE TO GET THE SPICES

If you live in western countries, my best advice is to buy spices online because

  • The spices are usually fresher
  • You can get more flavor variety upon clicking
  • You might save some money with discount codes

I’m living in Taiwan and I’m lucky to live near Huaxin Street, where stores a lot of different spices. If I cannot find a specific one, I’ll buy it online. I mostly buy them from iHerb. (affiliate link)

However, if you’re not comfortable buying things online, look for spice stores, Indian stores or the ones sell Asian ingredients.

If you love spices, I recommend buying in bulk rather than single jars, espcially for the ones that you use a lot. For me it’s usually ground cinnamon and ginger.

It might seem a lot to spend in the beginning, but the spices have a very long shelf-life, usually at least one year. So by buying in bulk, you will save money and time in the long run.

Also, if you have a grinder, consider buying spices whole. Nothing beats freshly ground spices.

HOW TO MAKE APPLE PIE SPICE

It’s very simple to make apple pie spice. You literally just put all ingredients in a jar and give it a few shakes.

HOW TO STORE APPLE PIE SPICE

Just like how you should store all your spices, store the apple pie spice in an air-tight jar in a cool, dry place like your cabinet or on the shelf and avoid direct sunlight.

If you store properly, the spice should last at least one year without too noticable changes in taste.

HOW TO USE APPLE PIE SPICE

As its name suggests, you can always use the apple pie spice in apple pie recipes, such as Vegan Apple Pie, Open-face Apple Pie.

But here I also want to share with you where you can add it in addition to apple pie.

Baked goods are always great choices when it comes to adding spices. I love adding it to baked oatmeals or crisps for the extra flavor and autumn note.

Other things you can also try include drinks, smoothie bowl, cookies, and oatmeals. Here are a few recipes that you can try:
